The big news in the shipping industry at the moment is the introduction of the new Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations, from 1st July.
The International Maritime Organization has amended the SOLAS legislation, which will now require shippers to provide the ocean carrier and port terminal representatives with the verified gross mass (VGM) of a packed container to allow them to prepare a stowage plan.
If the VGM is not provided prior to loading by a specified time, the port terminal operator and vessel owner will not allow the container to be loaded onto the ship.
